Three men are facing drug trafficking charges after an RCMP investigation into a ploy to smuggle drugs into the Bowden Institution.

On Nov. 5, corrections staff found a former Bowden inmate outside the facility's fence.

Jesse Cole, 32, was on statutory release from the prison after being released in September. He has been charged with two counts of trafficking.

Further investigation by RCMP and the Correction Service of Canada led to two Bowden inmates being charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Alan Goosens, 24, has been charged with two counts and Cory Michaels has been charged with three.

All three offenders have been transferred to higher security facilities. They are due in Red Deer court in February.

Bowden is a medium-security prison about 100 kilometres north of Calgary.
