Book of Mormon, Oktoberfest & Mean Girls: Calgary entertainment this weekend

It’s not hot out there, but there are lots of hot options in Calgary’s arts and entertainment scene this weekend. Here’s our weekly roundup to give you some ideas.

It's not hot out there, but there are lots of hot options in Calgary's arts and entertainment scene this weekend. Here's our weekly roundup to give you some ideas.

Book of Mormon

It could be called a Broadway show tune on baptism that really sounds like it's a song about having sex for the first time. And if that makes you uncomfortable then you're on the right track with what to expect from The Book of Mormon.

For the uninitiated, The Book of Mormon is crass and downright blasphemous, so if you're sensitive to religious slander or extreme profanity, you might want to take a pass on this one.

The show, however, is mostly sold-out so get your tickets soon or risk missing out.

Here's more ticket information for you.

Oktoberfest

You know, this weather is not terrible for getting outside and walking around and as long as you're bundled up appropriately, that cold crisp air is just delightful.

It can make you think about autumn, pumpkins, apples and beer.

The Inglewood Night Market is jumping on the Oktoberfest bandwagon this year for two nights only: Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

It's being billed these nights as Alberta's first free, outdoors, family-friendly Oktoberfest and it's in partnership with five microbreweries in the historic community.

Inglewood Brewery Flats district is featuring great bands and DJs on both days.

Head to Facebook for those event details.

ArtWalk

If you're looking for daytime outdoor walking opportunities, then definitely check out the 35th annual Calgary ArtWalk. This free, family-friendly festival features 23 different galleries, studios and stops where you can experience a wide range of visual art in Calgary.

You don't have to know anything about art to take part.

There's a map of locations and you can walk, ride, or transit to and dozens of venues where there will be artist talks and tours, exhibitions, workshops and more.

There's no set course for the walk, so download the map and choose your own adventure.

Here's all the details.

Theatrically inclined

September is when all the arts companies kick off their new seasons so it's a beggar's feast for the theatrically inclined.

Theatre Calgary launched Honour Beat last week, Alberta Theatre Projects launched The Virgin Trial this week and Vertigo kicks off with The Thin Man on Saturday night.

The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is back on stage Friday and Saturday with a pops concert featuring the music of the Fab Four: Classical Mystery Tour: A Symphonic Evening of the Beatles.

And the 37th Annual Alberta Dance Festival is on at the PumpHouse Theatre.

Mean Girls, The Dark Crystal

For people who just want to hibernate this weekend and for those who want to go retro, there are two fantastic film events going on.

First, we've got Fifth Reel who've teamed-up with Femme Wave to present Mean Girls Saturday Night at the Globe. This is a classic high school drama.

That's at the Globe at 10:30 p.m. but doors open at 9 p.m. for a pre-show, silent auction and more.

Here are the details.

Then on Sunday at the Plaza, a Jim Henson classic: The Dark Crystal. It was basically an apocalyptic film featuring Muppets but, they're some of the most deluxe Muppets you'll ever see

The Dark Crystal is at The Plaza on Sunday at 8 p.m. and tickets are at the door.

Here's more information.
