Raspberries on P.E.I. have difficult season

The raspberry season hits its peak this week, but wet weather has made it difficult for growers to get their crops to ripen perfectly.

The raspberry season hits its peak this week, but wet weather has made it difficult for growers to get their crops to ripen perfectly.

"The coming week's going to be the biggest week of the season so, if we get some reasonable weather then it would be good," said Sheldon Wheatley, owner of Wheatley's Raspberries, a berry farm and U-pick in Charlottetown.

"If we don't get reasonable weather, then all the berry growers are going to be in trouble."

Wheatley said the raspberries are softer this year and not as sweet because they've received less sunshine.

"It's not all negative," he said. "There are some positives to it. Berries that are coming along are bigger berries and that sort of thing."

He said raspberry sales have still been strong this season, despite the drizzle.
