Winnipeg School Division won't be able to offer a Spanish-immersion program to students this fall.

The division was hoping to offer a Spanish as a second language program for elementary students in September, but on Tuesday, announced there wasn't enough interest from parents.

The division had announced plans for the program last December, but it's only been able to find three parents to sign up for the kindergarten program. None signed up for the Grade 1 program.

The division needed at least 23 parents to start the language program.

Officials with the division said there was some interest among parents of older children, but they need more interest at the kindergarten level to start the bilingual program.

The program would have been the province's first Spanish immersion program.

The division already offers Hebrew, French and Ukrainian immersion. There are single courses offered in Spanish as well as other languages like Cree and Ojibwe.
