A massive fire destroyed at least eight units in a large apartment complex near King George Boulevard and 108 Avenue in Surrey, B.C., on Wednesday morning.

About a dozen more units in thefive-storey building at 10838 City Parkway were also damaged by water, as firefighters fought the flames.

Assistant Fire Chief Steve Robinson said it appears the fire broke out on a balcony around 5:30 a.m. PT and spread quickly up the outside of the building into the attic.

By 6:30 a.m. flames could be seen erupting from several units on the upper floors.

Firefighters evacuated about 45 units in the complex, and rescued at least one person from their balcony.

At 10 a.m. the fire was still burning in the empty attic of the building. The building has sprinklers.

Firefighters confirmed nobody was injured in the fire. They have not yet released the cause.

A reception centre has been set up by the city for affected residents at the Chuck Bailey Centre.
