Being cynical, apathetic, or narcissistic in your job can work against you, according to a human resources expert. Rob Henderson is President and CEO of BioTalent Canada, a company that helps employees in the biotech industry become job-ready.

"You may be very skilled technically at what you do, but if nobody wants to work with you because you're a bit of a poison pill in the workplace, your career is going to suffer as a result."

Henderson says be awareif your colleaguesavoid working with you or if you find yourself having to change jobs frequently. These are sure signs you have job-killing traits.

How to cure workplace negativity

Henderson says the first step to getting ahead is recognizing you aren't being the best co-worker you can be. Once you do that, finding a mentor can be helpful.

"I'd really encourage them to get a mentor that can guide them through the workplace and through a career someone's who's at a higher stage of evolution for their career than theyare."

You can do your own research too, says Henderson.

"I'd start going through the library, going online and taking a look at proper work behaviours. Things that can get you noticed behaviours that can advance your career and not be a detriment to you."

But Henderson says the most important step to take in curing workplace negativity is a willingness to change your job-killing ways.
