Police investigate death of 14-year-old girl in Inukjuak, Que., as a homicide

Someone called the Kativik Regional Police Force around 5 p.m. on Saturday, after they found the body of the girl behind a house.

TheSret du Qubecsays it is investigating the homicide of a 14-year-old girl in Inukjuak, Que, but no arrests have been made.

Sgt.Marie-Jose Ouellet saidthe Kativik Regional Police Force responded to a phone call saying thebody of a girl had been found behind a house at around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Kativik Regional Police Force does not investigate homicides, so it called in theSretduQubec.Investigators fromSretduQubec'smajor crimes unit have been in the community since Sunday afternoon.

Inukjuak'sMayor Pauloosie Kasudluaksaid it's been a difficult time for the community of about 1,800people.

He says people in the village knew on Saturdaynight that a body had been found, but it took more than 24 hours for police to tell the girl'sfamily.

"The local police couldn't tell us who it was. It was very hardto wait for the provincial police to arrive to tell us what happened," Kasudluaksaid inInuktitut.

"It was very hard for everyone, especially the family members."

Sgt. Ouelletsaiddetectives found evidence leading them to investigate the death as a homicide.
