Going for gold: 9-year-old Labradorian performs, competes in World Dwarf Games

Brooklyn Wolfrey, the only little person in Rigolet, says she's excited to be competing in the World Dwarf Games in Guelph, Ont. because it gives her a chance to compete and play with people like her.

It's a big week for a little person from Rigolet, Labrador.

Brooklyn Wolfrey, 9,is in Guelph, Ont.competing in the World Dwarf Games.

"They're little people like me and I get to play with them," Wolfrey, who is the only little person in herisolated community, told CBC's Labrador Morning.

In its seventh year, the World Dwarf Gameswelcomes"short-statured athletes with dwarfism from all over the world, from 4-99 years old, to participate," according to the event's website.

"It's great because in Rigoletthere's no one else that's a dwarf like Brooklyn," said Desiree Wolfrey, the nine-year-old'smother.

"So once she gets to meet other people like her, she feels more comfortable, more at home, and it gives her a feeling like she's not alone."

Wolfreyperformed a drum dance during Friday's opening ceremonies.

"It's about an inukshuk... that's hiding from children... they're playing hide and seek," she said of the dance.

Because there is no swimming pool in Rigolet, Wolfrey said she is most excited to take part in the swimming competition.

"We swim in a lake," Wolfrey said. "It's really cold."

Making mom proud

"Most of the time she's playing floor hockey or ball hockey with kids that tower over her and [are] older than her," Desiree Wolfrey said.

"It makes me proud and it's happy that she can do something that is up to her level with children her size."
