CoaldaleRCMP are investigating a fatal hit-and-run near Lethbridge that claimed the life of a 26-year-old man from the Blood Tribe Reserve.

According to police, two people were walking down Highway 5 near Township Road 82 shortly before 5 a.m. The pair a man and a woman had just left Lethbridge city limits and were heading toward the airport when the man was struck by a southbound truck.

Police say the man was on the southbound driving lane at the time of the collision.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was not hurt.

The driver did not remain at the scene of the crash but investigators believe the vehicle involved to be a red Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500 with a model year between 2013 and 2015.

Police say the truck will have "significant" damage to the front grill.

While it was dark outside at the time of the crash, police say there were street lights on in the area and visibilitywas good. Police say it's too early to determine what, if any, charges will be laid.

"I'm not sure why the driver did not stay. It's a criminal offence to fail to remain after these types of collisions. Once we identify and locate the driver, we will look into the reasons why they did not stay," said CoaldaleRCMPStaff Sgt. Glenn Henry.

Anyone with information is asked to contact CoaldaleRCMPor Crime Stoppers.
