Pierre Poilievre re-elected in Carleton

Conservative incumbent Pierre Poilievrehas held onto Carleton, as voters sent him back to Parliament for a sixth time Monday.

Poilievre and Chris Rodgers gave us one of our closest local races in 2015,then they had a rematch.

At 12:46 a.m. Tuesday, with 89 per cent of votes counted,Poilievreheld onto a lead with 24,886 votes or46.2 per cent of the vote.

Poilievre said he expected a closer result, but said it was nevertheless emotional.

"I'm incredibly humbled the people of Carleton have very generously put their faith in me," he said.

"I have two secret weapons that helped me win this election," Poilievresaid in his victory speech, holding up a pair of running shoes he wore during the campaign. He said he and his team knocked on 160,000 doors in the riding.

Conservative Pierre Poilievre credited his team's door-knocking and perseverance in his re-election in the riding of Carleton on Monday night.

Working with minority government

Poilievre also congratulated the Liberals on securing a minority government, but stressed how many seats the party lost.

"I do believe in our system there's a role for holding the government accountable, and it's very important to have voices who represent the people and ensure the government, which has enormous power, respects the will of the people. That's what I hope to do," he said.

He said Conservatives would collaborate with other parties when necessary and hold the government accountable, work to advance the party's promises and make life more affordable for Canadians.

Rodgers ended up with 20,478 votes or38 per cent of the vote.

In third place, was the NDP'sKevin Hua with9.5 per cent of the vote or5,849 ballots cast.

Also on the ballot wereGordon Kubanek of the Green Party, who also ran for the Greens here in last year's provincial election;and People's Party candidateAlain Musende, a Health Canada worker and part-time University of Ottawa biopharmaceuticals professor.
