Liberal incumbent Steve MacKinnon triumphs in Gatineau

Liberal incumbentSteve MacKinnon will represent Gatineauin Parliament.

MacKinnonwon with 52.1 per cent of the vote, or27,636 individual votes, as of 12:43 a.m. Tuesday with96.1 per cent of votes counted.

MacKinnon said voters have signalled they're seeking "more of the same," but also want collaboration.

His last term was marked with two major floods in the National Capital Region, a tornado in the fall of 2018and the ongoing Phoenix pay system scandal.

"Let's hope the next [term] is a little less interesting and is capped with the construction of a sixth bridge between Ottawa and Gatineau," MacKinnon said.

"There's no question that that is the Number 1 priority of the people of Gatineau."

Runner-upGenevive Nadeauof the Blocwas a distant second with11,417 votes or21.5 per cent of the vote.

2nd term

MacKinnon, a former Liberal party president, seized Gatineau from the NDP in 2015, and was oftencalled upon by the party to answer questions about local issues such as the Phoenix pay system.

He wasupagainst the NDP's Eric Chaurette, who's worked in food sustainability and security;Guy Dostaler, a carpenter running again for the Greens;former Gatineau city councillor and mayoral candidate Sylvie Goneau for the Conservatives;Mario-Roberto Lam for the People's Party; Nadeau, a teacher whose father and sister have been local politicians; and Pierre Soublire of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada.

The riding has been represented by the Progressive Conservatives, Bloc and NDP in the past.
