StormontDundasSouth Glengarry voters pick Conservative Eric Duncan

Conservative Eric Duncan has won the riding ofStormontDundasSouth Glengarry.

As of 12:19 a.m., with 87.2 per cent of the vote reported,Duncan had a solid lead with 54.2 per cent of the ballots cast. He was followed byLiberal candidate Heather Megill,who had 25.4 per cent of the vote, and NDP candidateKelsey Schmitz,who finished third with 14.2 per cent.

Duncan contributedpart of his success to his old-fashioned campaign style.

"We knocked on 5,000 doors, my team and I, in our area," he said.

Duncan isopenly gay and has spoken about how he felt welcomed by the Conservative party.

"I think it shows how far we've come as a country and as a society," he told CBC Radio's Ottawa Morning. "The support's been wonderful.... It was a non-issue in such a good way."

With a minority government in place, Duncan said he hopes the parties can work together on great ideas, including in furthering private members' bills.

Riding Conservative since 2004

Longtime Conservative MP Guy Lauzon retired, leavingStormontDundasSouth Glengarry without an incumbent.

The southeastern Ontario seat, which includes Cornwall and the Mohawk community of Akwesasne, has been Conservative ever since Lauzon beat out hisLiberal predecessorin 2004.

About 20 per cent of its residents are francophone.

Also throwing their names in for the open seat were:

  • Duncan, a councillor and mayor of North Dundasfor 12 years, works forhis family's trucking business.
  • Farmer Sabile Trimm for the People's Party.
  • Personal trainer and 2015 Greencandidate in Hamilton Raheem Aman.
