Canadian teams are Toronto Sceptres, Montreal Victoire and Ottawa Charge

Hockey fans, pull out your piggy banks. There’s some new sports merchandise to start saving up for.

On Sept. 9, the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) revealed the names and logos for its six teams.

Players spent the first season, which started Jan. 1, wearing jerseys with only the name of their location on it.

Now all six teams have a new identity.

The names of the Canadian teams are:

  • Charge in Ottawa, Ontario.
  • Sceptres in Toronto, Ontario.
  • Victoire in Montreal, Quebec.

The names of the American teams are:

  • Fleet in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • Frost in Minnesota.
  • Sirens in New York, New York.

There’s a story behind each team name and logo, too.

The stories behind the names

Charge reflects the motto of Canada’s capital city, which is “Advance — Ottawa — En Avant.”

Sceptre, which is the name for the staff a queen or king might carry, was inspired by Toronto’s history with Queen Elizabeth.

Victoire, the French word for victory, was inspired by Quebec’s Francophone roots.

Fleet, which is a group of boats, represents Boston’s connection to the sea. That’s why the logo is an anchor. (Tilt your head sideways for a better view.)

Frost, with its icicle-like logo, represents the state of Minnesota’s hockey heritage.

The name Sirens was inspired by the sound of New York City, not to mention the goal horn.

Many of the players expressed excitement over the new names and logos after the big reveal.

“Whenever you go into a huddle and you’re cheering for something, it’s nice to be able to name it,” said Fleet captain Hilary Knight.

Of course, not everybody is going to love the new names and logos, said Amy Scheer, the league’s vice-president of business operations. “And that’s OK.”

She said the process, which involved input from a marketing agency, PWHL staff and fans, was as “thorough” as it could be.

So what do you think?

The league said jerseys will be released in late October or early November.

The second season is set to begin early December.
