Patrick Watson's "Je te laisserai des mots" was released as a stand-alone single in 2010, and 14 years later Spotify has announced it as the most popular French song in non-French markets on the streaming service.

A song with only one full verse to it, "Je te laisserai des mots" was originally written for Catherine Deneuve's filmMres et Filles, and the song hasseen its fair share of TV placements. It started gaining steam again in 2019 when a popularYouTube account posted the song paired with archival home video footage, but TikTok users really pulled the haunting, piano-based track from the Montreal singer-songwriter into the 2020s during the pandemic, as it added melodrama to snippets of their everydaylives.

In September 2021, it was oft used during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, when TikTok had added "new resources for those who were struggling with suicidal ideations," according to NBC News. And inMarch 2022, Justin Bieber used it to soundtrack a video of his home life with wife, Hailey. As of September 2024, Watson's the songis approaching one billion streams on Spotify.
