Brushes with royalty

On Feb. 6, 1952, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was proclaimed Queen of Canada. Her spectacular coronation in Westminster Abbey the following year was heard by millions on the radio and was the first ever to be televised. When she visited Canada in 1951, 1957, 1959 and 1964, Elizabeth left an indelible mark on Canadians coast to coast.

Between her coronation and her Golden Jubilee, Queen Elizabeth came to Canada 19 times, touring every province and territory, from the smallest village to the nation's capital. Along the way, she has met thousands of Canadians from coast to coast and made an impression on hundreds of thousands more.
On the 50th anniversary of her ascension to the throne, listeners call the CBC's Vox Box to tell their stories of brushes with royalty.
. In addition to official visits, Queen Elizabeth has also made 10 stopovers in Canada en route to other countries between her coronation and Golden Jubilee. Most of these have been in Gander, Nfld. or Vancouver, B.C.
. While he normally accompanies Her Majesty on royal visits, Prince Philip has also made nine official visits to Canada on his own, as well as 20 private visits (usually to attend conferences or awards ceremonies) during this period.
