How artist Lisa Lipton defeated her self-doubt

This year'sSobey Art Awardwas announced on Wednesday, and the winner of the prize, given annually to a workingCanadian artist under age 40,was Abbas Akhavan. But for one of the artists that made the shortlist, the nomination itself transformed her life.

Meet Lisa Lipton, a drummer and artist with a multidisciplinary practice. She's finishing her first feature film,The Impossible Blue Rose, and it fictionalizes episodes from her own life, with other actors playing her role. One of the moments it tackles is a pretty low chapter a quarter-life crisis, even when she questioned whether she could continue as an artist.

Now, that period is in the past, and Lisa opened up to CBC Arts about the film, how she's doing, and what the Sobey nomination did for her.
