Margaret Laurence penned several classic Canadian novels throughout her celebrated career. She twice won the Governor General's Literary Award for fiction first in 1966 for A Jest of Godand again in 1974 forThe Diviners.Laurence was born and raised in Manitoba, and, shortly after graduating from college, worked as a reporter for the Winnipeg Citizen. She later moved to Somalia for two years, Ghana for five years and spent a decade in England. Laurence eventually returned to Canada in 1974, settling in Lakefield, Ont., where she died in 1987.
