Hamilton race organizers discuss security after Boston bombings

Around the Bay, Road to Hope marathon organizers will work with police on safety measures.

Organizers of popularrunning races in Hamilton say there's no question they willbe working with police to talk security.

In the wakeof two bombs exploding near the Boston Marathonfinish line Monday, event planners in Hamilton and across the globe are re-evaluating safety measures.

The city's most famous race, the 30kAround the Bay Road Race(ATB) istouted as the oldestrace in the continent, selling out early and drawing in thousands each spring. This year's race had more than 8,000 competitors in the 30K event.

"In light of what happened in Boston we're probably going to make some changes,"said Mike Zajczenko, ATB race director.

But right now, it's too early to tell what changes those will be, he added.

"In the next few months, when the facts come out and who was involved, then you can take all that into consideration and maybe apply some things back here. You can't make rash decisions if you don't know what you're dealing with," Zajczenko explained.

Blast and trauma plans need to be re-evaluated: ATB medical director

ATB medical director Dr. Ira Price is an emergency medicine physician and has co-ordinated disaster relief simulations at Hamilton General hospital in 2010. He said every Hamilton race event he's been involved in has a disaster plan.

"These plans usually outline procedures in case of stand collapse, mass dehydration and riots," said Price. "Events such as blast and penetrating trauma at sporting events are extremely rare and aren't usually on the priority list. In light of yesterday's events, I do believe that I will have to re-evaluate the plans at sporting events which I attend to include blast and penetrating trauma."

Following Hamilton Police direction is paramount, said Gord Pauls, theRunner's Denowner who alsoacts as organizer for theAncaster Mill RaceandRoad2Hope.

"I'll go by what they say. We'll be following their advice," said Pauls.

The marathon distance is 42 km or 26.2 miles. That long stretch of road, any way youmap it,is a gigantic challenge when it comes to security.

"It's virtually impossible to cover it all," said Pauls. "Hopefully increased security and awareness...if people see something they call authorities. The police line the course so the police will have a strong presence."
