Before you head out onto the water this summer, here are some things you should be aware of when it comes to water activities and drowning.

CBC went to a public pool in Kitchener to get some practical tips for swimming safety.

As summer heats up and more people are out on the water, drowning cases unfortunately become more frequent.

According to the 2012 Canadian Drowning Report by the Lifesaving Society, 57 per cent of all drownings across the country took place between May and August from 2005-2009.

In the video above, Heather Mcdonald,a head lifeguard at the Breithaupt Centre in Kitchener, explains some of the most crucial swimming techniques that she and her team teachto beginners.
