The Edge of the Ice

The Edge of the Ice

For as long as people have lived on the coast of Labrador, they've hunted seals. The meat fed families and dog teams. The skins kept feet and hands warm. The seal was the staple of the Inuit people. Without it, they simply could not have endured.

Now the spring seal hunt is mostly sport on the coast, in these days when people no longer have to live off the land to survive. Still, it's a hunt..and a season...many still relish. In this show, we follow three seasoned Makkovik hunters to the ice. And in their search for spring seals, we see how some of the old ways of the Inuit are still being practised. And preserved.
