Archival Special - The Newfoundland Disaster
It was March, 1914. A century ago.

The wooden sealing ship Newfoundland passed through the St. John's narrows on her way to the front. It was the time of the annual spring seal hunt.

The Newfoundland left St. John's that March with a full crew.  But by the time it was all over, 79 of her men had perished. They'd frozen to death on the pack ice during a fierce winter storm.

The sealing tragedy goes down in history as one of this province's darkest maritime disasters. And this year, on its one hundredth anniversary, Land and Sea remembers those souls lost on the ice...in an archival special, originally broadcast 40 years ago.
