Designer tips for creating a Euro chic room

Designer Christine Dovey gives us some tips and tricks for decorating a beautiful space with a European flare.

Steven wanted to get back to his roots, so he brought in designer Christine Doveyto show us how to decorate an ultra-stylishspace with a little European flare. The key to mastering this aesthetic is simple: have a colour scheme in mind, but generally just buy things you really like and they will work together. If you're still not sure where to start, here are Christine's best tips for putting together a Euro chic space:

Start with art

Choose one central piece that speaks to you and can act as a guide for designing the rest of your room. An eye-catching piece of art will likely dictate that you buy other interesting pieces. Make sure to choose something dynamic, and don't be afraid to go modern super modern art on old plaster walls looks amazing!

Buy large pieces next

Once you've got your art locked down, it's time to select your furniture.Always buy biggerpieces first, so that you can set the foundation for the layout of your room. Look for items that pull out colours from the art you've chosen, like we did with thisblue velvet sofa from Mobilia.

Layer your rugs

Start with a simple rug as your base. Most of the decor in your room will be punchy and stand out, so this piece doesn't have to try to compete. Layer a second rug on top to add some much-needed texture, like we did with this hide from Black Rooster.

Step up your seating

Don't stop at a sofa! With a European-style room, you can have fun with your seating. Layer in sculptural chairs, like these cool ones from Stellar Works, and don't be afraid to mix and match.

Add a floor lamp

Since you'll likely be dealing with the traditional overhead lighting that came with your space, find something that's striking and graphic to contrast, like this minimalist floor lamp.

Invest in accent tables

Get creative and fill in the holes between chairs with eccentric pieces, likethisgeometric table in mirrored glass.

Be whimsical with your accessories

This is where you can really let your personality shine through! Interesting, sculptural pieces will add character to your room and ensure that it doesn't look like you just went to a big box store and bought the catalogue. You can layer these finds in over time, so don't feel like you have to get them all at once.
