If you think milk products are fattening, think again! There are many good reasons to choose milk and milk products whether you want to maintain your weight or lose a few pounds.

  1. Calcium - your ally for a healthy weight

  2. Over 30 scientific studies show that a diet low in calories but high in calcium or milk products may make it easier to maintain a healthy weight or lose excess weight. How? It appears that calcium encourages the body to better use fat as an energy source, which reduces the amount of fat stored in our cells.

A research team led by Angelo Tremblay, a professor in the department of social and preventive medicine at Universit Laval in Quebec City, also suggests that when our bodies lack calcium, the brain interprets this as a sign of hunger. As a result, our brain sends out a signal to eat. That's an added bonus for making sure that you get enough calcium every day!

Finally, milk products seem to be more effective in weight management compared to calcium supplements. This suggests that other nutrients found in milk may be part of the explanation. So reach for a serving of milk and milk products rather than the bottle of supplements.

  3. Protein - better appetite control

  4. Milk and milk products offer high-quality protein that is used to build and repair tissue, and produce antibodies needed for a strong immune system. Protein also plays a key role in keeping your energy levels up, steadying blood sugar levels, and preventing hunger between meals. Try eating protein-rich foods throughout the day at meals and snacks, and notice any differences in your appetite control.

  5. Milk - a nutritious beverage

  6. The liquid calories from beverages can add up very quickly. Some sugary drinks contain as many calories as a whole meal! Excess calories from all sources, including sugary drinks, can lead to weight gain. Plus sugary beverages tend to score low in nutrition.

Milk, on the other hand, contains up to 16 essential nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D and protein, and milk keeps you hydrated. The next time you're thirsty, rethink your drink and choose a nutritious beverage.
