Grant Lawrence

Grant Lawrence has long been a leading voice for Canadian music. He is the host of the CBC MUSIC TOP 20, the voice of CBC RADIO 3, the host/producer of the Canadian Music Class Challenge, and the host/producer/creator of Searchlight.

Grant started his career at the CBC in 1998 while in his twenties, when he became a researcher on the newly created music and culture show RadioSonic with hosts David Wisdom and Leora Kornfeld. By 1999, Grant was hosting RadioEscapade, an experimental late night network program on Radio 2 that introduced new voices and new music to CBC listeners. Among those voices was Mary-Anne Korosi, Grant's current producer on the CBC Music Top 20.

By 2001, Grant moved into primetime, becoming the host of RadioSonic. His first show was on Saturday September 15, 2001, just days after the attack on the World Trade Centre. In 2003, RadioSonic became CBC Radio 3, and won a New York Festivals Grand Award for Best Music Radio Program.

In 2005, Grant became the host of the CBC Radio 3 Podcast, the CBC's first-ever original podcast. It lasted for twelve years, showcasing thousands of independent Canadian musicians and bands. Grant remains the voice of CBC Radio 3 on SiriusXM 136.

In the summers of 2013 and 2014, Grant drove a Volkswagen Beetle across Canada for CBC Music's Beetle Roadtrip Sessions, visiting and recording musicians in their hometowns, which was filmed, produced and directed by Brent Hodge. The Beetle Roadtrip Sessions won a Canadian Screen Award in 2014.

Lawrence is also well-known in B.C. for his wilderness storytelling serials that air periodically on North By Northwest, the province's weekend morning show.

Grant Lawrence is currently the host of the CBC Music Top 20, your weekly countdown of the 20 hottest adult alternative tracks, airing on CBC Radio 1 and CBC Music weekly.

Prior to his work at CBC, Grant Lawrence was the lead singer of the internationally acclaimed Vancouver garage band The Smugglers. He is also a goalie, a bestselling author, and he lives in Vancouver with his wife, singer-songwriter Jill Barber, and their two children.
