Margaret Gallagher

Margaret Gallagher is the host of North by Northwest, BCs highest-rated weekend show.

Shes been a key part of the CBC family for more than 20 years, hosting CBC Radio One's Hot Air (2010 - 2022) as well as taking part as a regular on CBC Radio One's The Early Edition (2001 - 2018) and On the Coast (2018 - 2022). She also served as the BC host of CBC Radio 2's Canada Live and as a contributor on CBC TVs Living Vancouver.

Margaret's ability to tune into the city and find stories off the beaten track has taken her up mountaintops, down back alleys and through the heart of the city.

Margaret has won multiple awards, including a Jack Webster Award for Best Feature for "The Wayfaring Stranger: Lost and Found in Vancouver" (2015) and three prestigious National RTDNA Dave Rogers Awards for Best Radio Feature for "Fade to Black" (2003), "Gail the Golden Age Goalie" (2011) and "No Small Feet" (2012). She was also part of a team behind "Eleanor Collins at 100" which received a Bronze Medal at the New York Festival Radio Awards in 2020.

Prior to joining the CBC, Margaret was active on the arts scene and worked with the Western Front, the Video In and the Independent Film and Video Alliance. She has worked as an editor, a freelance writer, and technical communicator, and taught technical communication for five years as part of the SFU Writing & Publishing Program.

Actively involved in community outreach, Margaret has tirelessly donated her time and efforts to many Vancouver events. She has hosted dozens of events for a variety of arts and community groups, including UBC & SFU Alumni Associations, Vancouver East Cultural Centre, West Vancouver Public Library and Vancouver International Folk Music Festival.

In 2015, Margaret won a "Community Builder" Award from the Hapa-palooza festival of Mixed Roots in recognition of her work to connect communities and, in 2020, she won the Asian Heritage Month Pan Asian Recognition Award (2020).

Music has been a theme throughout her life, beginning with her studying classical singing and being a member of Gamelan Kyai Madu Sari, a Vancouver-based group of creator-performers who have been active in the community since 1986. Shes currently taking adult piano lessons because its never too late to learn. She lives in East Vancouver with her family and two rowdy cats.
