CBC TAKES HOME 12 CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS AT CREATIVE FICTION GALA

ANNE WITH AN E, BARONESS VON SKETCH SHOW and SCHITT’S CREEK each win multiple awards

March 28, 2019 - CBC, in partnership with its production partners, garnered 12 awards from The Academy of Canadian Film & Television for its original scripted programming during the second night of the Canadian Screen Awards. Held in Toronto on Wednesday, March 27, the creative fiction storytelling gala honoured excellence in writing, directing, supporting roles, editing, cinematography and more across drama, comedy, children and youth, and variety programming categories. This brings the public broadcaster’s 2019 Canadian Screen Award wins to a total of 40 so far, including awards received during the non-fiction awards gala on March 26.

The public broadcaster’s original drama programming received six awards, led by five wins for acclaimed drama ANNE WITH AN E including Best Supporting Actress, Drama for Geraldine James, and Best Supporting Actor, Drama for R.H. Thomson, recognized for the second year in a row for his role as Matthew Cuthbert. FRANKIE DRAKE MYSTERIES was awarded  Best Costume Design for Debra Hanson.

CBC’s original comedy programming picked up six awards including four wins for female-led sketch comedy BARONESS VON SKETCH SHOW for the second consecutive year in the categories of Best Sketch Comedy Program or Series, Best Writing, Variety or Sketch Comedy, Best Direction, Variety or Sketch Comedy, and Best Picture Editing, Comedy. Hit series SCHITT’S CREEK won Best Supporting or Guest Actress, Comedy, honouring Emily Hampshire for the fourth consecutive year, and Best Supporting or Guest Actor, Comedy for Noah Reid’s first-ever win.

The 2019 Canadian Screen Awards will be broadcast live on CBC and the free CBC Gem streaming service on Sunday, March 31 at 8 p.m. (9 p.m. AT and 9:30 p.m. NT). Leading up to the broadcast, Canadians can share their thoughts on the nominees with CBC on Twitter @CBC using #CdnScreenAwards.
