CBC WINS 18 CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN CREATIVE FICTION

Wins include four awards for MURDOCH MYSTERIES: A MERRY MURDOCH CHRISTMAS

and three each for BARONESS VON SKETCH SHOW, KIM’S CONVENIENCE

and THE TRAGICALLY HIP: A NATIONAL CELEBRATION

CBC programming continues to shine as The Academy of Canadian Film & Television awarded the national public broadcaster and its production partners 18 trophies during the second night of the Canadian Screen Awards on March 8, honouring excellence in creative fiction in drama, children's and youth, comedy, performing arts and variety categories. 

MURDOCH MYSTERIES, Canada’s most-watched home-grown drama series,* took home four awards including Best TV Movie or Limited Series for its first-ever holiday special, A MERRY MURDOCH CHRISTMAS, which was watched by 2 million Canadians.**

CBC Comedy also shone brightly with acclaimed all-female sketch-comedy series BARONESS VON SKETCH SHOW and breakout hit comedy KIM’S CONVENIENCE collecting three wins each including Best Variety or Sketch Comedy Program or Series for BARONESS VON SKETCH SHOW and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Supporting Role or Guest Role in a Comedic Series for Andrew Phung of KIM’S CONVENIENCE. SCHITT’S CREEK’s Emily Hampshire was recognized with the Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role or Guest Role in a Comedic Series award for the second year in a row.

CBC original movie UNCLAIMED earned Elle-Maija Tailfeathers a win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Program or Limited Series, and animated holiday special THE CURSE OF CLARA: A HOLIDAY TALE was awarded Best Animated Program or Series.

THE TRAGICALLY HIP: A NATIONAL CELEBRATION garnered three awards including Best Direction in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program or Series, which now brings its total to five Canadian Screen Awards including two previous wins (including Best Live Entertainment Special) during the non-fiction gala on Tuesday, March 7.

CBC’s Stratford Festival broadcast of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW nabbed two wins for Best Performing Arts Program and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Program or Limited Series for Ben Carlson.

The 2017 Canadian Screen Awards, hosted by comedian Howie Mandel, will be broadcast live on CBC on Sunday, March 12 at 8 p.m. (9 AT and 9:30 NT). Leading up to the broadcast, Canadians can share their thoughts on the nominees with CBC on Twitter @CBC using #CdnScreenAwards.
