CBC North announces Hilary Bird as the new host of THE TRAILBREAKER.

CBC North’s flagship morning show in the Northwest Territories has a new voice, a longstanding local journalist committed to helping share her community’s stories.

Bird is already very familiar with her environment, becoming an integral part of CBC North over the past twelve years with hands-on experience in almost every role CBC North offers. Her career beginnings mentoring and counseling youth in Northern Alberta would soon lead to her helping Northern Indigenous communities find their voice through radio. Something she was drawn to by her compassion for others.

“I want people to share their stories with me and know that they’re safe and that they will be respected,” says Bird of her new role. “We’re going to ask tough questions, we’re going to hold people accountable but one thing I want to ensure is that anyone is interviewed, they felt respected.”

For the past twelve years, Hilary Bird has been an integral part of the CBC North team as a reporter. Recognized for her exceptional storytelling ability that connects the community, her hard work and commitment have won her several national and international awards. This dedication can be found in more than just accolades. It’s also found in her approach.

“One thing I truly never want to forget is how much trust people put in us when they tell us their stories”, acknowledges Bird.

Bird begins her hosting duties replacing long-term former host, Loren McGinnis, who is now the host of Calgary Eyeopener.

THE TRAILBREAKER can be heard on weekdays from 6:00 to 8:30 a.m. MT on CBC Radio One and on CBC Listen. The show shares the latest news, weather and information to connect you with the great Northerners who are breaking trails in the Northwest Territories.
