50 Shades books most left behind in U.K. hotels

Erotic novels have once again topped the list of books left behind in U.K. Travelodge hotels.

Fifty Shades Freed, the third novel of E.L. James' Fifty Shades erotic romance novels, was the book most often left behind in the U.K. chain of hotels in the last year, with a total of 1,209 abandoned copies.

Erotic fiction dominated the hotel chain's annual list of books left behind. James' Fifty Shades of Grey, last year's top left-behind book, rankedsixth this year, with Fifty Shades Darker ranked tenth.

Erotic fiction dominated most of the list this year, with Sylvia Day and Jennifer Probst making multiple appearaces.

James's erotic trilogy has earned her both fame and fortune. She tied for third in Forbes' list of top-earning celebrities,making an estimated $95 million US in the last year.

Other discarded books include Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy and My Time, the autobiography of British Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins.

One classic novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, squeezed in at the Number 20 spot.

Travelodge's Shakila Ahmed said that in total 22,648 books were found to be discarded in hotel rooms by departing guests, a small increase from 21,786 books last year.

"Over the last three years, our annual books left behind study has shown a decline in celebrity biographies but a rise in fiction, especially for thrillers and romantic trilogies," said Ahmed.

In December, Travelodge U.K.'s "Bizarre Left Behinds" listed other, more esoteric items left behind from guests, including 76,500 teddy bears, a suitcase of vinyl records and adiamond-encrusted wedding ring.
