Gasoi crafts jazz-based tunes meant to appeal to both tots and their parents. It was her first Grammy nomination.

Ive dreamt of this day for 20 years, its on my vision board. Im officially the first Canadian to win a Grammy for best childrens album!" Gasoi declared onstage.

Throw a Penny in the Wishing Well is "about living your dreams, having the courage to step out of the box, take risks and live the life youre really meant to live. I feel really proud to be doing that."

Bubl was also among the early Canadian winners, picking up his fourth trophy in the best traditional pop vocal album category for To Be Loved. He was not present to accept the trophy.

Singer and nominee Cyndi Lauper announced some of the early awards during the pre-telecast ceremony, jokingly giving acceptance speeches for the artists who were not present. The red carpet opened with a crush of people ahead of the show, as most of the nominees in the less mainstream categories vying for camera time before the big stars flooded in.

The Grammys officially got underway Sunday at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles with a pre-telecast ceremony hosted by Lauper where awards in approximately 70 categories were presented. This portion was streamed live at Grammy.com/live.

The festivities continued Sunday evening at the Staples Center in Los Angeles with the televised Grammy gala hosted by performer LL Cool J.
