Justin Bieber, The Weeknd win their first Grammys

The Weeknd, Bieber joins other Canadians winning Grammy Awards as the pre-show honours are handed out in Los Angeles.

Justin Bieber and The Weeknd have won their first Grammy awards, joining Joni Mitchell and other Canadianswho were also given trophiesas the pre-televisedshow honours were handed out in Los Angeles.

Justin Bieber, whose hometown is Stratford, Ont.,won best dance recording for the song Where Are UNowalongsideEDM hitmakersDiplo andSkrillex. This is Bieber'sfirst Grammy.

The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, has picked up two awards: best R&B performance for the Fifty Shades of Grey song Earned itand best urban contemporary album forBeauty Behind the Madness.

Co-writer and producer StephanMoccio, who is also Canadian and shares acredit for the album, accepted the award on The Weeknd's behalf. He thanked Tesfaye'sentireToronto team in his acceptance speech.

Legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell won for best album notes on Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting To Be Danced.

Jan Haust, a native of London, Ont., and Hamilton's Peter Moore captured the honour for best historical album for The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11,featuring themusic of Bob Dylan and Toronto's The Band. The duo shared the award with Steve Berkowitz, Jeff Rosen and Mark Wilder.

The top awards will be given out during Monday evening's televised ceremony.

Toronto artistDrake is up for several awards, includingbest rap album for If You're Reading This It's Too Late.
