Robin Thicke backs out of Junos to rest voice

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences confirmed on Sunday morning that Juno nominee Robin Thicke will not be performing or attending this year's awards ceremony after being placed on "mandatory vocal rest."

Thicke who is nominated for three Junos including Artist of the Year, Pop Album of the Year and the Juno Fan Choice Award for his hugely popular hit song Blurred Lines was also forced to cancel concerts on Friday and Saturday evening.

"This is show business, so we're always prepared for this type of situation," said John Brunton, executive producer for this year's show, in a statement.

"This morning's announcement will not impact what is looking to be a hell of a show. If rehearsals are any indication, viewers will be treated to a fantastic broadcast, and a few surprises as well."

Thicke has been at the centre of a controversy in the lead-up to the Junos after an online petition seeking to ban him from the show accrued more than 800 signatures.

Thickes critics argue that hissong Blurred Lines and its accompanying video, which includes women dancing topless around the singer and posing in compromising positions, promote sexism and degrade women.

The Junos air live on Sunday evening at 8 p.m. CTand will be co-hosted by Classified, Johnny Reid and Serena Ryder.
