Contest celebrates Canadian visual artists under the age of 40

The Sobey Art Foundation and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia have announced the longlist for this year's Sobey Art Award.

The longlist includes 25 works, with five pieces chosenfrom five regions of Canada. A curatorial panel, made up of one representative from each region, also representing each region in the country, will whittle down the list to a shortlist of five finalists and ultimately a single prize winner.

The shortlist will be announced on June 4, and the winner will be announced at a gala event on November 19. The winner will receive $50,000, with $10,000 going to each of the four runners-up.

The remaining 20 longlisted artists will receive $500 each.

The Sobey Art Award showcases the work of visual artists under the age of 40, whose work hasbeen exhibited in public or at a commercial art gallery.

Last year's winner was Cree artist Duane Linklater, whose thought-provoking work Tautology fashioned First Nations imagery out of neon lighting.
