Incendies sweeps Jutra Awards

Denis Villeneuve's Incendies swept Quebec's 13th annual Jutra Awards, winning nine prizes, including best film, director and actress.

The Montreal filmmaker's adaptation of Lebanese-Canadian Wajdi Mouawad's play earned a raft of trophies at the annual celebration of the Quebec film industry, held Sunday night at Thtre St-Denis in Montreal.

Incendies follows siblings who return to their mother's homeland in the Middle East to unravel the mysteries of her past. It also earned a best screenplay award for Villeneuve and Valrie Beaugrand-Champagne.

Lubna Azabal won for her portrayal of the heroine in Incendies, after winning a Genie in the same category last week. The film had captured a leading eight Genies in total including best film anddirector and had also been nominated for an Oscar.

Claude Legault won the best actor Jutra for his role as a case officer who helps a delinquent boy in Daniel Grou's social drama 10.

Dorothe Berryman picked up the best supporting actress prize for her work in the comedy Cabotins, directed by Alain Desrochers.

The best supporting actor trophy went to Jean Lapointe for the drama l'origine d'un cri. Lapointe's film career was also honoured with the Prix Jutra-Hommage, a lifetime-achievement award.
