Goon wins Golden Box Office prize

Hockey comedy Goon has scored Telefilm's Golden Box Office prize, presented annually to the English-language feature film that draws the most money at Canadian theatres.

Hockey comedy Goon has scored Telefilm's Golden Box Office prize, presented annually tothe Canadian English-language feature film that draws the most money at theatres.

The prizecomes with $20,000 cash for director Michael Dowse and a $20,000 cash prize for the writers, Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg.

Goon stars Seann William Scott as a bouncer who finds fame when he joins a local hockey team and beats down his opponents, much to the delight of fans. The hockey comedy was a box-office hit from the moment it opened in February 2012, beating Hollywood imports on its opening weekend. It eventually earned more than $3 million at the Canadian box office.

An award presentation will take place June 18 at Toronto's Hockey Hall of Fame, with Dowse, Baruchel and Goldberg confirmed to attend.

Earlier this year, Resident Evil: Retributionreceived the Golden Reel Award at the Canadian Screen Awardsgala. The zombie film grossed more than $5.4 million in Canada. Though the film had a Canadian producer, it didnt qualify for the Golden Box Office because its director and writer are not Canadian.
