South Park creators to debut Broadway musical

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have regularly included hilarious musical numbers in their irreverent animated TV series and their films. Now, the duo will be taking their offbeat humour to Broadway.

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have regularly included hilarious musical numbers in their irreverent animated TV series and their films. Now, the duo will be taking their offbeat humour to Broadway.

Parker and Stone have teamed up with Robert Lopez one of the creators of bawdy, Tony Award-winning puppet comedy Avenue Q for the upcoming musical The Book of Mormon.

Producers of the new show announced on Wednesday that the musical comedy will debut in New York in March 2011.

Parker and Stone penned the show's book, music and lyrics with Lopez's help. Parker and Jason Moore, who directed Avenue Q, will share directing duties.

Casting has yet to be announced.

Parker and Stone regularly include songs and performances into the cheeky storylines of South Park and even shared in an Oscar nomination forwritingBlame Canada, an original tune from their 1999 film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.

Lopez has cited South Park as an inspiration for Avenue Q, which picked up a trio of trophies at the 2004 Tony Awards: best musical, best book and best score.
