Toronto critics tap Coen brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis

Inside Llewyn Davis, the latest from Oscar-winning sibling directors Joel and Ethan Coen, has snagged top honours from the Toronto Film Critics Association.

The 1960s-era folk music drama, set against New York's Greenwich Village scene, was named best picture while its star Oscar Isaac earned the best actor title from the Canadian critics group, which announced its 2013 winners today.

The critics group spread its other awards out across an eclectic batch of films. To be eligible, films must have been released in Canada in 2013 or qualify for the 2013 Oscars (and have a Canadian release set by late February 2014).

"It's been an unusually thrilling year for cinema," TFCA president Brian D. Johnson, film critic at Maclean's, said in a statement.

"These awards celebrate a remarkable diversity."

Other winners include:

• Best actress: Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
• Best supporting actor: Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
• Best supporting actress: Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
• Best director: Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
• Best screenplay: Spike Jonze, Her
• Best first feature: Neighboring Sounds, directed by Kleber Mendona Filho
• Best animated feature: The Wind Rises
• Best foreign-language film: A Touch of Sin

Canadians celebrated at gala

The group bestowed its BMA Allan King Documentary Award ($5,000) to The Act of Killing, directed by Joshua Oppenheimer.

Three films will compete for the TFCA's Rogers Best Canadian Film Award ($100,000):

• The Dirties, directed by Matt Johnson
• Gabrielle, directed by Louise Archambault
• Watermark, directed by Jennifer Baichwal and Edward Burtynsky

The best Canadian film winner and recipients of other honours will be unveiled at the annual TFCA Awards gala, hosted by Toronto International Film Festival artistic director Cameron Bailey, in Toronto on Jan. 7, 2014.
