Air Transat temporarily shutting down, other airlines offer refunds amid new pandemic measures

Ottawa isn't banning non-essential travel; it's making it as inconvenient and expensive as possible. Now, in addition to existing requirements, returning travellers will need to quarantine in a hotel for three days at their own expense, at a likely cost of at least $2,000.

Air Transat said Friday it is temporarily suspending all operationsuntil the end of April, as it and other Canadian airlines adjust to newpandemic measures introduced by the federal government to curb international travel.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the new measures earlier in the day sayingAir Canada, WestJet,Sunwing and Air Transathad agreedto suspend service totheCaribbean and Mexico from Sunday until April 30.

However,Air Transatlater said on its website that it will suspend all operations, not just flights to sun destinations,starting Friday.

The Montreal-based airline did not say if it was offering refunds, but said it is "working on a repatriation plan" for customers abroad whose return flights were scheduled during that period.

Air Canada said in a statement it will offer refunds to customers whose flights are suspended due to the restrictions if there is "no alternative available" to them. The airline says flights to 15 destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean are affected.

Justin Trudeau announced that Canada's main airlines have agreed to suspend service to sun destinations until April 30.

Sunwingsaid it is working to notify customers about changes to their flights, adding those who have their bookings cancelled will be "provided a full refund to the original form of payment."

The Toronto-based company said its decision to suspend flights "wasnot made lightly but something we deemed necessary."

Trudeau on Friday alsointroduced new mandatory quarantine rules for travellers entering the country.

"With the challenges we currently face with COVID-19, both here at home and abroad, we all agree that now is just not the time to be flying," he said in Ottawa.
