General Motors is set to unveil a new model slated to be built at the CAMI Automotive plant near Ingersoll, Ont.

On Wednesday, the company's new crossover GMC Terrain is to be unveiled at the New York auto show.

The Terrain isa replacement for the Pontiac Torrent, and is viewedas a competitor to the Ford Edge, the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Mazda CX-7 and Nissan's Murano.

Due to hit showrooms at the beginning of August, the Terrain is a five-passenger vehicle that will initially come in 2.4-litre, four-cylinder and 3.0-litre, V-6 models.

The CAMI plant has 1,400 hourly workers and about 500 more on layoff.

The chairman of Canadian Auto Workers Local 88, Mike Van Boekel, is hopeful the move will help get the CAMI plant back up to full production.
