Cereal maker Kellogg said Thursday it will build a $97-million plant in the Belleville, Ont., area with the provincial government slated to chip in $9.7 million.

Kellogg will hire about 100 new employees for the plant, which will produce Mini-Wheats cereal.

The factory, located about190 kilometers east of Toronto, will beKellogg's first new North American manufacturing plant in more than 20 years.

As part of its strategy to aid the province's manufacturing sector, the Ontario government provides companies with repayable, interest-free loans for up to five years to support investments in technology.

"Ontario's support and Belleville's skilled workers were contributing factors in our decision to invest," Francois Rouilly, president and chief executive officer ofKellogg Canada Inc., said in a release.
