Jim Shaw has stepped down as CEO of Calgary-based Shaw Communications, advancing the date for his resignation from next year, the date the company first announced on Oct. 22.

The companyannounced late Wednesday that Shaw has been succeeded by his brother, Brad.

"We are well underway in the integration of the Shaw Media assets," Jim Shaw was quoted as saying in a news release from the media and internet company, "and it became clear to Bradand I that it would be best for Brad to assume the role of CEO immediately so that he can move forward with the necessary decisions."

Jim Shaw, who is in his 50s, served as CEO of the company founded by his father, J.R. Shaw, for 12 years. He will continue as a vice-chair and a member of the board. Peter Bissonnette will continue as president and a member of the board.

Brad Shaw, 46, takes over leadership one month after the firm bought the television assets of Canwest Global Communications for $2 billion last month and as it creates a network to handle its plannedwireless business.

"There has never been a more exciting time in our industry and I look forward, along with our very talented management team, to building upon the legacy that my father and brother have established as chief executive officers" Brad Shaw said in the release.
