TransCanada, Petro-Canada to build natural gas plant in Quebec

TransCanada Corporation and Petro-Canada plan to build a $660-million liquefied natural gas plant in Gros Cacouna, Que.

TransCanada Corporation and Petro-Canada said Wednesday they plan to build a $660-million liquefied natural gas plant in Gros Cacouna, Que., about 15 kilometres northeast of Rivire-du-Loup.

The proposed facility would be capable of producing approximately 500 million cubic feet a day of natural gas.

TransCanada and Petro-Canada will equally share the costs to construct a liquefied natural gas receiving, storage and re-gasification facility on Gros Cacouna Island, adjacent to the existing harbour.

TransCanada will operate the facility, while Petro-Canada will supply the liquefied natural gas.

The project is expected to employ 500 to 1,000 people during the construction phase. Another 30 to 50 people will be hired to operate the facility.

The companies said it will take approximately two years to get regulatory approval from federal, provincial and municipal governments.

Provided the necessary approvals are received, TranCanada and Petro-Canada expect the facility will be in service towards the end of the decade.
