The B.C. SPCA has rescued 16 dogs and two quarter horses, all of them filthy and living in unacceptable conditions, from a rural property in Clearwater, B.C.

SPCA constables also found two dogs and a calf dead on the same property. Most of the rescued dogs were standard poodle and golden retriever crosses known as golden doodles.

SPCA Const. Kent Kokoska said the Clearwater RCMP first notified them of the animals.

Kokoska called the level of neglect of the seized animals very disturbing and said the investigation is continuing and charges of animal cruelty are pending in the case.

The dogs are being treated in SPCA community centres in Kelowna and Penticton. None are up for adoption as of yet.

The horses, both of which were kept in what Kokoska calls "substandard" conditions and suffering from cracked hooves, have been taken to Kamloops.
