A deadly account: Innocent bystanders killed in gang shootings

An Abbotsford neighbourhood is in shock after a 74-year-old bystander was shot and killed Wednesday night, an innocent victim of the Lower Mainland's ongoing gang wars.

An Abbotsford neighbourhood is in shock after a 74-year-old bystander was shot and killed Wednesday night, an innocent victim of the Lower Mainland's ongoing gang wars.

The unidentified elderly man was hit by a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting targeting the man's neighbour who had known gang connections.

During more than 20 years of gang warfare on the Lower Mainland,there have been others:

  • September 2009:Rajinder(Raj) SinghSoomel, shot deadat a halfway house in Vancouver.Police believe another man living at the halfway house was the intended target.

  • May, 2008: Jonathan Barber shot dead in Burnaby. The stereo installer was killed while driving the car of notorious gangster Jamie Bacon.

  • October, 2007: Christopher Mohan and Ed Schellenberg, shot dead in theSurrey Six killings. Mohan,a resident of the building, and Schellenberg,a gas fitter, were murdered alongside four known gang members on the 15th floor of a high rise condo.

  • January, 2007: KirkHolifieldshot and killedin his truck in Richmond. The 35 year old fatherdrove the same colour, make and model truck as known gang memberDavidTajali, and also bore a physical resemblance. Police believe his murder was a case of mistaken identity.

  • April, 1994: Glen Olson, shot dead while walking a dog in East Vancouver. Olsen was a neighbour of notorious gangster Bindi Johal and police suspect rival gang members mistook him for Johal.
