Police in Abbotsford are appealing for witnesses to a violent assault last Sunday at a bar in that Fraser Valley city.

A fight broke out just as the NBA championship game was wrapping up and, at first, it was thought the Cavalier's come-from-behind win had sparked the violence but police now say the fight had nothing to do with basketball.

Major crimes detectives have determined a large group of men arrived at Finnegan's Pub specifically to target a single victim, and two people were hurt in the resulting melee.

Forensic and video evidence is still being gathered, and police also hope witnesses will come forward to offer vital information after seeing newly released, grainy photos of some of the people and vehicles linked to the brawl.
