B.C. man charged with attempted murder after alleged knife attack: RCMP

RCMP say they received several reports Saturday afternoon about a man with a knife near an intersection south of the Deep Cove neighbourhood.

The man also faces other offences including assault with a weapon after the alleged attack on Saturday

Police say a man has been charged with attempted murder and other offences after he allegedly used a knife to slash cars, then attacked a motorcyclist riding in NorthVancouver,B.C., over the weekend.

RCMP say they received several reports Saturday afternoon about a man with a knife near an intersection south of the Deep Cove neighbourhood.

A statement issued Monday by police spokesman Const. Mansoor Sahaksays the man damaged a number of cars before striking themotorcyclist'shelmet and causing him to fall off his bike near Mount Seymour Parkway and Deep Cove Road.

District of North Vancouver Mayor Mike Little said Saturday that, based on his conversationswith witnesses, the attacker appeared to be in "distress" and began assaulting a motorcyclist.

He was toldthe situation could have been far worse if not for the motorcyclist's safety gear andquick actions of a bystander.

"When the motorcyclist retreated from the attacker, a quick-thinking individual opened his car door, allowing the motorcyclist to take refuge while the attacker continued banging on the vehicle," Little recounted.

Sahak said in the statement that the motorcyclistsuffered minor injuries.

The statement says numerous officers arrived on the scene within minutes and took the suspect into custody, where the man allegedly assaulted an officer.

Police say the man from NorthVancouverhas been charged with attempted murder, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, mischief, assaulting a police officer, and weapon possession.
