B.C. records 9th swine flu death

One more person has died from the H1IN1 flu virus in the Fraser Valley area, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

It was the fifth death from the virus, also known as swine flu, in the Fraser Health Region east of Vancouver. No details about the case were released.

Two other people have died in the province's Interior Health Region, and one each in the Vancouver Island Health and Vancouver Coastal Health regions, for a total of nine so far in British Columbia.

A total of 111 people have been hospitalized with the disease. Health officials say children, pregnant women and people with pre-existing health conditions are more vulnerable to the disease.

A 26-year-old woman who died from the infection last week did not have any underlying medical conditions, according to the centre. Ashley Miller, the mother of a one-year-old girl, died two days after she was admitted to Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

People in the 60s or older are thought to have some immunity to the disease because of a previous outbreak. Vaccines are expected to be available early in November.
