B.C. temple shooting suspect turns self in

A Surrey, B.C.,man has been arrested and charged in connectionwith a shooting at aSikh temple on Saturday morning, police say.

Maninder Gillturned himself in to Surrey RCMP on Monday and has been charged with fivefirearms-related offences, said Const. Peter Neily.

Gill, 47, is a well-known broadcaster in Metro Vancouver's South Asian community.

Police were called to the Guru Nanak temple near 72nd Avenue and Scott Road at about 12:40 p.m. PT Saturday after reports of several gunshots.

Harjit Atwal was shot once while in the parking lot of the temple and suffered minor injuries, but the shooter got away.

Witnesses said the shooting followed an argument that had broken out between two people at a wedding.

Officials at the temple denounced the violence and also said it was likely fuelled by a feud.

Sources told CBC Newsthat Gill and Atwal are known to each other.

Atwal is recovering from a non-life-threateningwound to his leg.
