Some Burnaby, B.C., residents say food scrap bins are not secure

North Burnaby residents are worried their food scraps program is attracting unwanted bears, after several recent sightings in the area.

Some area residents say they want the city to replace the food scraps bins with more secure containers.

"I think it's time to have a different garbage bin, like bear-proof like the other communities in Coquitlam or Port Coquitlam," said area resident Judith Nusser.

Neighbour Louise McElhill agreed.

"I'm just worried that a bear might end up being destroyed because they've been brought in to the neighbourhood, " she said. "I love the wildlife here and I really care about the welfare of bears. "

The city says when it purchased the bins, animals weren't a problem.

Residents are being told to secure the bins in an enclosure, to freeze food scraps and to only put them in the bin the morning they will be picked up.
