Commuters who travel along the Burrard Street Bridge may be in for a bit of a surprise today.

Phase one of the$6-million reconfiguration of the south end of the bridge begins today.

Part of the project is to install separated bike lanes and eliminate the confusing intersection at the foot of the bridge.

The work is the first stage of the city'scontroversial reconfiguration of Cornwall-Point Grey Roadto shift emphasis from vehicle traffic to bicycles and pedestrians.

The entire project along Point Grey Road is expected to last well into 2017.

But starting today, drivers may want to use the Granville Bridge until construction is complete in spring 2014.
